Zalia - The History

Zalia was created by Monica Ramirez, a first generation American of Peruvian descent, who grew up to be a beauty pageant winner, professional makeup artist, and a passionate thought leader - one of only a few that Latinas have seen in recent years.

Monica’s greatest influence came from her family. Their unconditional support was the foundation upon which Monica built her vision and dream. She was steeped in the ways of the Latina, the subtle strength and vibrant spirit that makes women of Latino communities such pillars of strength and beacons of beauty. As a makeup artist, she was continually frustrated using products that were unflattering to Latina skin tones. After extensive research, she concluded that her Latina sisters (Las Chicas) were equally frustrated; Monica decided to do something about it.

Zalia, “More than Beauty”, is the philosophy, the vision, and the embodiment of the personal values of the brand’s founder, Monica Ramirez. It is the underpinnings upon which all of the brand’s life-force will be dedicated. There is no Zalia without beauty; but equally, there is no Zalia without an understanding that there is more than beauty, that it is incumbent upon us to go to the community and help the next generation up the ladder; that the spirit of Zalia must be passed from mother to daughter, sister to sister, fueling and inspiring the celebration of Latin culture, of ese algo.

Most importantly, Monica not only wants women to feel good about how they look - she wants them to feel good about who they are and what they do. She has dedicated much of her personal time to charitable functions and organizations that empower women of Latin descent with a variety of tools needed to promote self-esteem, self-growth and success. Her work is an inspiration to her peers and colleagues and, as a result, she has been invited to speak at different venues on topics of motivation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Zalia Cosmetics has committed to re-invest in the Latino community by dedicating 3% of its profits to charities that help Latinas and entrepreneurs.

Zalia – The Z Team

Every great company requires a great team and a sound capital structure. Zalia, the Company, has teamed up with several executives with experience in the cosmetics industry and in launching and financing startups. Khaled Haram, Zalia’s CEO, is a seasoned executive with ten years of experience at Estee Lauder Companies. In partnership with Monica, Khaled has put the sales and “go to market” strategy of the Company. Peter MacDonald, the Company Vice President of Finance and Operations brings more than twenty years of deep financial and operational experience; he has founded and successfully sold several companies. In addition, Zalia has partnered with industry veterans for its marketing, creative and public relations activities.
